Another outfit change?

Well, we have now had the dubious distinction of going through our first stomach flu with Brandon.

It has really sucked. The flu hit on Saturday morning. It was a nerve wracking experience as the contents of B's stomach repeatedly chose a rapid exit... up until close to midnight. Then Sunday morning, round 2 started in the southern regions.

Needless to say, B has had his ass kicked by the damn flu, I am sure he has lost a pound, and learning how much and when to reintroduce food is a challenge. Yes, he is on the mend, are we fully there yet - nope. There have been times I wished we had hardwood/laminate floors throughout the whole house, and times where I wondered if the laundry would ever be done. He has been a real trooper though it all, but it has been brutal.

I used a call a friend to Nej on Saturday night to touch base about these wonderful bugs, and just to find out if this is truly how much it sucks when it is your baby with the flu. She answered with a resounding yes. It sucks this bad. Checked in with a doc and he said no need to call in the cavalry, but man, it sure would be nice if B was eating like he normally does. Last night he ate some dinner, and then powered through way too much milk and we both wore it again. Ah yes, life teaches about you limits and what is reasonable for an itty bitty stomach that has been shrunk over 4 days with a liquid diet. *SIGH*. This kind of thing is all experiential learning, you don't figure this out until you have walked down the path. Doesn't help that you have suffered through your own flus, etc. It is different when it is your babe, and you know they will eat when they are ready, and all the rest of that... it is hard letting go in that sense and just concentrating on getting the fluids in, and cleaning up the messes when they happen.

So, when I have a chance I will attempt to update the last few weeks...

Or maybe I will quickly paraphrase and if I get back there, great...

Grapples. Stay away from the Frankenfruit. They are gala apples injected with grape juice. Avoid.

Victoria was great - but bloody hell if it wasn't like winter when we were there. When we went up island we woke up with 4 inches of the white stuff the saturday morning we were going to spend on the beach.

New job is good. My presentation went well - stressful.

Man, April has kicked my ass.

Wherefore art thou, spring?

It is snowing.

I perhaps should have worn a sweater.

The upside is, at least I have a window to look out!

Is there a lesson here?

Day 2 of cleaning out my new office.

I have created 8 boxes of confidential shredding, and 6 tubs of recycling, a box of office supplies, unearthed about 200 old diskettes, thousands of paper clips, many many page protectors and dividers, and there are dust bunnies and paper bits every where.

Holy shit. It is weird going through someone else's papers. What the hell, how do you walk away from your job and leave so many boxes of your crap? Who do you think is going to look at it? Each time I have left my jobs in the last few years (between my mat leave, and then truly leaving, and then my recent switch) I left my office spic and span and ready for the next person. I cleared out my crap. Apparently no one has wanted to through anything out.

I found a goal statement paper from 1983. Yup. 1983. I found pictures from the 90s. Was our hair really that big and our clothes that bad?

And the emails. From the dawn of time. And ineligible writing, and half filled writing tablets stuck in boxes here and there. And I have boxes of empty binders. It is mind blowing. I know I am totally going off on a rant here, but it is amazing. There are still 13 boxes in my office, and a completely full book shelf, and a hanging file cabinet and that is just less than half of what there originally was. Some stuff will be archived, other stuff is being picked through. I can't give stuff away. People keep popping their heads in my office, and what started as me trying to look at stuff before it got turfed has turned in to me looking at the date and then either stuffing in to a box for archiving or dumping in to shredding.

The up side is that it helps for ownership, I am hoping that I am not stepping on anyone's toes... apparently there hasn't been the staff, time, or impetus to do a clean out like I am doing. Hell, the last occupant left 10 years worth of desk calendars kicking around. WTF? I am involving some of the people that would have had a vested interest in some of the paper, and we have had some good laughs, some interesting tidbits have surfaced, especially from staff members that haven't been around for more than 10 years.. and a report on which my name was on it from when I was a student.. that was trippy.

So that was my day. Oh yeah - they do white spot fridays - any one who is around from our area and wants lunch, well, everyone grabs some tables and hangs out. It is cool - we have a drama book to write in, and there is some great energy. It is different than what I am used too - this has been a good switch, in a different way than my last job was a good switch from the original one.

Next week will be my first full, 5 day week in forever. The later starts are nice, and I will be happy to have things cleaned up so the days aren't so... well, unstructured. I want to get my teeth in to stuff. I have a presentation to plan for at our AGM in 2 weeks!!!!

It took the dude forever to fall asleep tonight. Ken's at hockey, and I am a little fatigued. I am going to try to dive back in to Love in the time... but it isn't a fast read by any means. It is taking me time - I find the writing convoluted, and for me, the style doesn't flow that easily. It is interesting, the tale that is unwinding, but I am only a 1/3 of the way through.

I am being tempted by a dry apple cider. A blanket, a cider, my book, and the couch. Sounds not so bad. Either that or I have the latest CSI:Miami that I could watch. Thank god for media centre and being able to just program what I want "taped". It makes life so much easier. I do not miss the old VHS. Man, do I keep rambling or what?

I have a window!!!

I am settling in to my new digs.

Already I am learning new things, or at least reminding myself about stuff I already knew. Time is flying. So much so that I pretty much forgot to eat lunch yesterday. By the time I realized I had forgotten to grab something of substance, it was time to go home. I knew we were having pasta, so I feasted on that an promptly gave myself a queasy stomach, and a roaring headache. The joys.

It was strange walking in to work on the first day - going "behind the counter" where I used to be a student. Some stuff is cutting edge, other stuff blows my mind at how far behind it is.

I am back to cleaning out an office. I am on my 4th recycling bin, and have filled a confidential shredding box. There are duplicates of duplicates, and policy books that go back well in to the 90s. A historical record is nice, and there are requirements for records management... BUT!!! There is a point where that kind of information volume becomes a nasty beast and you just don't want to deal with it - at all. In I come... I do have an amazing view, and I do have 15 boxes that still need to be sorted, plus all the stuff on the book shelf. It feels a little chaotic, but I am feeling very welcomed, and already valued. It has been really cool. That said, a little daunting at times because some of the way that things has been done is really convoluted, and I come at a time they want to make some big changes, which is great, because that seems to be where I am at, and the team that I am with.

Time is flying. I still don't have an office key, or my own access card, and I still need to go to the gym and get me a membership. I am giving myself the week off - I figure there is enough chaos without getting my ass to the gym - especially since eating has been an issue, LOL. I also realized that I only did a trip to the loo once. Can we say, drink some fluids girl!!!

The shorter days and later start time is nice.. as is the 10 minute commute (after a 15 minute walk to the car, which I expected, which is actually quite nice.. me time, to just walk.... and not think). Today I am going to grab the dude, and poppa, and head off to the ducks. Which is cool because it wasn't an option to do that before dinner when I wasn't getting us home until close to 6! It's nice starting at 8:30 instead of 7:30.. mornings are not so hellacious.

That's a week!

Well, I made it.

Wrapped up work, and the last two days have passed by in a blur. I sent Brandon to daycare, and I ran errands, and cleaned, and puttered about doing god only knows what, and frittered away time, and cleaned the kitchen, and did laundry, and more laundry, and then even more laundry (was everything we owned dirty?)... and then I went to that big store of DIY and got a new coffee table. Anyone want an old one? I have coveted a new coffee table since we had to go back to our really old one. See, when you have a young dude, it really doesn't make sense to have a glass-top anything. You are just asking for it, so we retired our cool coffee table and brought back the one I inherited, and well, it did the job and that was about it. The new one is more functional, and smaller and taller, and well, I like it better.

I was on a mission to get our passports renewed too. I rocked up at 7:15... I had my book, some water, and I figured I had a few hours to kill before my hair appointment at 11.

I was DONE before 8! I was shocked - I didn't know what to do with myself! I guess when they have enough staff they do a "soft" opening to get a start on the day. I got back in my truck, and I thought- what now? I am on the wrong side of the bridge in the middle of rush hour. So I grabbed myself a java and took the long way around. Wandered around the mall, dropped off my package at my new work... which was cool. I went there for so long as a student, it is crazy to be there as an employee. Damn cool though, and nice being able to flash a letter and get parking, and not be forced in to the lottery to be even considered for a space!!! Yesterday, like today, passed way too quickly and it was time to pick up the little guy before I knew it.

It was just nice to be. Made up a budget we can blow to smitherines, cleaned up my bookshelves, took out recycling, and now I surf. Soon I think I shall bathe. Or at least read a book. It feels like the calm after a big storm. Although I really like my last job, and I made a few friends, I am looking forward to this change, and whatever it will bring. The last few weeks were all over the board, and now, it feels like the start of something new.

Last day

I feel moody, gotta love the hormonal surges of being woman... hear me roar.

So, it's my last day and I was absolutely unmotivated to get my ass of the couch this morning. Ken left with the dude before I was even dressed! At least traffic was generous to me, which means I was in by 8:15... which also means that once I have worked my 7 hours, I am outta da place.

I got in early yesterday and packed up all my gear and loaded it in to the truck and then parked and came back in. I didn't want to do the walk of shame down the halls with my box of binders, a plant, and then my framed degrees (I figure I don't have the space to hang em at home, so at work they get to be) in my hands, loaded down, obviously making my way out of the building..

I get to turn in my key, give them back their ID card, and I have no idea about my parking pass. Maybe I can sell it to the highest bidder? That is one thing that I will miss, where I am heading I will go from paying $25 a year for parking to about $450 a year... *SIGH* and I will still be walking about 10 minutes from the lot to my office... I guess it isn't as bad as paying to park in the city.. but for someone who hates paying for parking...

It is strange though - my overall boss has not said good bye or wished me luck, and my true boss is almost acting like I no longer exist - which is true, but just sits weird. I will end up quietly slipping out of the building later on today.. no fanfare... just vamooshing. Some people have been awesome - just happy for me, and others, well, they are acting like nothing is happening. It is interesting who actually wants to head out for a coffee or a word, and who doesn't. It is telling. I am doing a long coffee, and a pub lunch today. My kind of farewell.

Just finished a book that was just kind of ok. I usually really like this series, but I found that this one didn't catch me... it took me a few weeks to finish the book instead of my usual days. That is telling for me. It wasn't bad, just not the usual page turner. It also could have been me, and not the right book for now. We are going to read Love in the time of Ch0lera next for our book club, and I am feeling a bit leery about it. I couldn't finish the 100 years of solitude.. so I hope that I fair better with this one!!!

Easter was too early this year.

It felt like the Easter weekend came too damn early this year.

This weekend went by way too quickly, again. We did a whole bunch of visiting on Friday, and Ken made a lovely anniversary dinner of salmon and veggies. It was awesome... hard to believe we have already been married 2 years today!!! It feels like it has been a lot longer...

We drove up to Kelowna to visit Pete and Gilly, whom were in town, for the night at her parents, and after cooling our heels for an hour in town, we made it out to Lake Country. We stayed in the middle of lake (great views, although no Ogopogo) and wine country, and did some tasting in the afternoon. I was surprised to see that the winery charged for tasting - how many people show up at a winery to taste and don't buy something??? It was strange... But Gray Monk has some nice wines, and I walked away with a nice Pinot Gris. The company was great, we chatted, drank, ate, and did it some more! It was a great visit and we left after breakie on Sunday. It was surreal to see P and G in Kelowna at her folks when they are living in Calgary and we are out here.. it was fun to do something like that - spontaneous and just to get out and experience something a little different. I love that every now and then!

We left in time because there was snow between Kelowna and Merritt, and then again (and even worse winter weather) through the Coquihalla. By the time we made it through to Hope, I was grateful we didn't leave later because the pass was getting really bad with the snow, bad viz, cars and trucks stalled out everywhere... I was happy to be on the other side of the mountains! We picked up Ken's mom on the way home, the big turkey with my folks, and then the weekend was done and Ken was back at work today.

I got some house cleaning done, we fed the ducks, I grocery shopped... all that mundane stuff. I have a few days off at the end of the week after I finish work, and I have a "to do" list of all the stuff I don't normally get a chance to do. I am going to still send Brandon to daycare - which feels somewhat strange.. but I am doing stuff like dropping off my package at HR, and getting a haircut, and renewing our passports so it will be easier to fly solo. Hell, it will be nice to have a few moments to myself. I think it will be only a part day for him on Friday... there are just a few little bits to do, and then I will grab my little dude and perhaps head out to the park for a walk and some fish n chips... something wild and crazy like that! Amazing how fast the time does fly... and how organized you have to be with your time.. that's the thing as you get older.. more structure, no matter how much you try to fight it, that structure saves your ass most of the time!!

First day of spring?

Damn this year is already going fast.

There are times this week that I really feel like the odd ball, and other times where I am pretty aware that I will be missed. Then there are the things that I really won't miss (like doors being slammed when I (or anyone else for that matter) is being too loud). It is like being on holidays... for the whole trip you really don't want to go home until you reach that very last day and then you start to think about your own bed, and everything you left behind.. somehow on the last day it is ok go to home. It has been like that here - making the decision was hard, telling everyone really sucked because being the bearer of bad news is never easy, especially when you know that even though it was "contact" they were trying to keep you... (but there is a BIG difference between being temporary for a year and three years, surprise surprise). Now, it is more like being in limbo.

Cleaning out your office, and scouring your work PC is a weird experience. Packing everything in to a box, and deleting all those files, erasing your presence. It's easier since I haven't been here forever, but I park the car a damn long way away so it is a pain in the ass to get everything back to the car unless I want to drive it around and park out front.

I guess enough whining - the change will be good, and I am really excited about the new job. There should be some good synergy, and hopefully my learning curve won't be too steep. Or at least interesting. At our AGM in a few weeks I get to do a presentation, so I am sure that will keep me somewhat busy!

I am GLAD we have a long weekend. Doesn't feel like it should be Easter already, WTF? We are doing a quickie roadtrip to Kelowna, and a turkey with the folks on Sunday... I will only be at work 2 days next week, so I am sure I will finally chase the dust bunnies around the house, and hopefully work my way through a spring cleaning. We can't use our shed. It needs help.

Yesterday's news

Well, I drank some guinness and wore some green, had some shepard's pie, my son got a lucky green coin, I made some lucky shamrock cookies, and thus passed a St. Paddy's day for us!

This morning, I am feeling like yesterday's news. One of the first things I was told this morning was to not come to today's peer meeting. Er. Um. Thanks! I guess don't let that door hit me on the way out, eh? Ah well, it usually lasts for 2 hours, they are drawn out meetings, and frankly, perhaps not such a bad thing that I am released from going! Half the time I am counting ceiling tiles, and the other half I am watching one of my coworkers to see if they are going to fall asleep! It just makes me feel a wee bit odd inside, I am already feeling excluded.

I am the one choosing to leave, and I know they did what they could to try to keep me, but sometimes it isn't about the short term, you have to take the long view and the long term benefits of the new place are superior.

I keep getting asked whether or not I am excited about going - I am, but I haven't even gone there mentally. I guess when it is in your face and you don't go to a staff meeting and stuff envelopes instead, it is pretty obvious you aren't "in" anymore, and I guess it is becoming more real for me. It'll be strange walking the halls where I once went to school - I am actually being paid to be there now! Things are the same (like the funky old smell in the older elevators) and they are different too - I'm still me, but I have grown up too. It doesn't feel as unknown as this job change to my current position was. I am going back to more familiar ground, literally and figuratively. I will be the new kid in town again though, and hopefully it will be a good fit for me there with all their personalities. I hope that if I am really sharing an office, that it works out. I am sure I will make it work, whatever it is... change is good. LOL... that is my mantra. Just feels like a lot of change in the last year.

on the move... again

I can't believe it. I am switching jobs, again!!!! For the third time this year, I am on the move.

O M G.

After staying with my last employer 10 years, and the one before that 7 years, I can't believe I have created so much change for myself in such a short period of time. I can't believe I am doing the rounds and saying good bye again. It is crazy - especially since here I made really good connections with all kinds of folks right away, and am a good fit, and have been going to the gym, and had projects on the go, and even been on a first name basis with the higher ups. I know that they want to keep me, but here, at this point, they can't offer me a permanent position. Not for another 2-3 years. Plus the guy I am replacing in my current job, could choose to stay away for the next 2 years, and yes, there will be movement, but the movement is created by people going on leaves, but not actually resigning.

So, I am on the move again. The new job comes with some really good benefits besides being permanent. I should have an office with a view, even if it looks like I will be sharing the space. It too comes with a gym membership (I intend to keep going) and the staff are fairly new to the job, and excited to make changes. I am joining the team so to speak at the right time. There is a mat top up, and if I wanted to further my education (yes, that is possible) it would be free. This stuff makes my head spin. I am going for coffee with the VP this morning, I have no idea what I am going to say! I guess it could be a form of an exit interview...

When I left my last job, I truly felt done with that place. I was actually somewhat choked up yesterday walking in - I enjoy it here, the people are pretty cool, and I have been learning a different aspect of the job. I don't really see myself as done here, but the timing and the new opportunity, I have to follow it. Plus it comes with some supervisory duties actually in the title, which means I can start moving on in time too. Nice to have official rather than indirect.

I'm happy - the security helps take an edge off that has been there on the backburner these last few months. It is hard worrying about whether or not you made the right call to leave a long term job for a one year contract with the possibility of an extension. In fact, I got offered an extension here on Friday, deferred making an answer, and found out about the new job offer late Tuesday. Did I mention my head has been spinning?

I have 2 weeks left, and will start the new job on April Fools. Hard to believe I switched jobs at Thanksgiving, and now, the next turkey holiday, I am switching again. Yup, I am still wrapping my mind around this.

a fine mist

It's a strange morning where the land is cloaked in a mist and a fine rain that finds its' way in to everywhere. Mornings like this I wonder what it would have been like when BC was first being colonized and folks were traveling up the Fraser in their canoes... how mysterious the land would have looked with the mist and fog clinging to the trees.

We're springing forward time-wise this weekend... I think I am happy we are doing this blatant manipulation of time early, but I was just getting used to getting in my car when it was light out! 7am doesn't seem nearly as bad when you are getting in to your car and it is already light, rather than getting in to your car when it is dark, and following a ribbon of bright red tail lights on your way to work.

It feels like spring is around the corner - I am already fantasizing about where we can possibly go for camping or day trips. I guess that never really begins or ends for me. I do have the travel bug and it feels like it has been a while since we have spent any time somewhere different. Going to the island to visit family doesn't count as a holiday!! I've got some happy daffs coming through, and the splash of colour is nice. I don't know if I should go for more of a pretty garden this year, or a more functional one. I love home grown tomatoes, but I haven't found my zen spot to do it in in the garden. I may just have to get creative and make a space....

I'm still achey from my fall, and the bruises are colourful. Shaving my legs this morning almost... hurt!!! On a totally different note, I have contacts again! It has been at least 6 months since I have had a pair to wear (I scrambled for hockey the last few times and I used an old one in my right eye... my left eye went naked) and it is so nice to not have my glasses sitting on the end of my nose, getting dirty, getting pushed up. It is nice to just have vision without the frames.

Not so graceful

In true Kazzy-style, I was walking down a set of stairs with a few potential co-workers whom I wanted to make a great first impression with.

I had my purse in one hand, and a binder in the other. I am still not so great at the whole purse thing because the damn thing always seems to be sliding off of my shoulders. Well, down I went, sliding down about 5-8 stairs on my knees. I scared the hell out of the people ahead of me, scared the hell out of the people I was with, and well, everything was happening so damn fast I am glad that it was only my inside voice screaming out OH SHHHHHHHITTTTTTT!!! as the floor came rushing up to me. My momentum stopped before I got to the bottom so I didn't get to suffer the embarrassment of sliding in to a finish and then toppling over face first. I got up, brushed off my pants, told them I was ok, and smarted. My legs hurt. I have bruises between my knees and my ankles, and any pressure in that area hurt. Hell, walking up stairs hurt.

On a side note, it was a beautiful slide I am sure that I perfected in hockey.

cranky pants... again!

Ever have one of those days where you can't decide whether or not you are in a bad mood? I had one of those today. Amazing how much it helps to head to the gym, even if it is for my piddly little 1/2 hour on either the rowing machine or the elliptical, to just be physical. Turn off that brain for a while.

Work is intense, I am reading a lot of files, and a lot of stories, and some make me emphasize for the person and make me wish I could help them out more, and others make me cringe, or make me angry that someone would have the kahunas to ask for more in the position that they come from. It takes all kinds, and that comes out of the stack. But after a few hours of reading these files, and then cross referencing them on my computer, I am done. My attention span is shot, and I start to look for distractions. Then I look at the boxes that are left to assess, and I am grateful we have a professional development day tomorrow, although that just delays the inevitable.

I am getting in some quiet time at nights - although I am alternating between one late night, and one night where I am a lame ass and I am asleep shortly after 9. What the hell happened to those nights when I was up all night long (even if it was just reading) and then getting ready to go to work the next day and do it all over again? Those days are long gone. I am fantasizing about sleeping in until 8, and the longer days, and hopefully more sunshine so we can spend more time outside.

I had a moment deserving of a stupid sign today. I figured I would treat myself to a mocha since I was dragging my ass all over the place after I worked out, and I brought along my travel mug. I had the lid in my hand, and grabbed the first mocha that came up, forgetting that there could possibly be a similar one ordered right before mine, and not in a traveler. I didn't notice, and went to walk out, and well, I put the mug lid right smack in to the whipping cream topping and made a helluva mess. I didn't swear out loud for once, but I felt like a tool standing there with my mug lid in the cream, my hands all sticky, realizing that I left my mug behind me (it wasn't even ready yet!!!! the nerve of me!!), and well, took someone else's drink and already started in on it. The gals at the counter were good, but I feel really sheepish about the whole thing. That will teach me eh?

I also want to complete the practicum component of a program that I started just over 2 years ago. I need to have everything handed in by the 15th, and the days are slipping by too damn quickly. I have some release time at work to get'er done... but the other damn job needs to get put to bed. Quickly. So I can do what I want to do. LOL. I am keeping lists at work, and I think that is the only thing that is keeping it all together for me right now.

It seems to me..

I have been lucky to write a post a week over the last year, and even that at times has been a stretch.

O M G. I have an almost 19 month old. When the hell did that happen?

I think I have been exceptionally klutzy this week. I have bruises. The whopper on my ankle from hockey, the one on my arm where I ran into something, a good one on my hand, sore spots on my back. Another one on my leg, I am not sure where from.

Once again, TGIF in a few hours. It's been a long week, especially for a short one. Especially one in which the monday was the best day of the week!!!

Just about done my book - it has been great and I would recommend it, even if the book is popular. Which gets me thinking, why is it when someone or something or a group becomes popular, the thought rises, that perhaps theis success makes them a sell out? For instance, my brother used to like Green Day, until they made it. I never stopped liking them, tending to buck trends. Or when plaid was in, well, it was strange to be in for a while, but then plaid faded off in to the sunset again, or when everyone wore doc martens, I stayed true because they are a damn good shoe, I just wish they made more girly boots that we could have access to up here in Canada Eh? But, I must admit, when something becomes "the next big thing" I am a bit leery. I was surprised when I was hooked by The Da Vinci c0de back in the day because it was almost too popular, or to discover that the HP books/movies were great too. What is it about success? We all crave it, but when others get it, we tend to react to it? Ah, funny human emotions.

It is quiet again. I made cookies. Chatted on the phone a bit. Cleaned the floor. It's been nice. Who knew these moments of domesticity could be just that?

God's creations.

Is this not the craziest looking camel you have ever seen? Look at that beard! He must be trying out for ZZ TOP!!! Er. I am not sure why I figure the camel must be male...

We spent a wonderful family day together. Did a run across the line for cheese and gas, went to the zoo, had some ice cream at a dairy farm, it was just fabulous. Blue skies, and it felt like spring. We wrapped it by having a date night and catching a true rockin and rollin concert. We saw Tom Cochrane and John Cougar (I know he isn't that any more, but for some reason I always stumble over the Mellencamp part). It was an awesome show - high energy, the crowd was in to it, the sound was great, and it was at the Coliseum and not the garage.. I love all the guitars, and for a guy who had a huge heart attack 10 years again, JM is an amazing performer - he knows how to get and hold his legions of adoring fans. It was a great show, almost over all too soon. What I couldn't get over was all the cell phones in the audience. No more days of great clouds of smoke coming up from the chaotic floor seats, and lighters held aloft... it was the light of cell phones waving to slow songs... or people taking vids. I couldn't help but feel sorry for the folks that watched the show through the lens of their phone - but I guess there is room for all types of experiences but I was enjoying it in the moment, not putting an extra layer in between me and the experience....

It's been so long, I had to take a picture of the clear skies....

Not a creature was stirring....

It feels like a rare moment when the house is quiet and I am up to enjoy it.

Last week was a tough week. There were 'tsn' turning points at work, where I think that a bit of the honeymoon period is definitely starting to wear off a little. We are in a real crunch time, and I heard it a few times in not so many words that me being away Monday (my normal flex) and Tuesday (Brandon has an appt) is rotten timing, from a procedural standpoint. Well, I can't say that I had a lot of control on all of that equation, and when the chips are down, the job will get done, but if you have a problem, be straight up with it. I guess at some point next week I will have to air a few of my impressions of the week with work so it doesn't fester. The truth sets you free, right?

There have been lots of ideas bouncing around in my head, and a few times I wanted to run over and write up some prolific post, but then life gets in the way, and the moment passes.

I am really enjoying EPL, I really have found that I have gotten more out of the 2nd part of the book than the first part. In one section she speaks of knowing herself, and getting to know herself, and being aware that she is a talker, and well, channeling that, but also realizing that being a talker is ok, but there are more ways to be a more thoughtful talker, and perhaps I got a little something out of that section because I can be a talker too and sometimes really need to be aware of that, and to reign myself in at times. Not always wedge both feet in, and not allow my own energy take over the conversation (kind of like being a new parent and you see an adult that isn't a family member for the first time in what feels like weeks, you come off a little hyper and crazy).

It feels like a few days of indulgences - I don't think I truly overate, but what I did eat included cheesecake, and popcorn, and a chocolate bar. Hell, I think a doughnut even made it in to the mix at some point. I could feel guilty, but I enjoyed it all too damn much.

Also got to play hockey again on Friday since Ken has been out of commission - it was a rout, and not for us. We lost, badly. I took a puck to the ankle (a lovely bruise) and got caught with my head down (felt like I got pile-drived, I was a bit light headed after that one for a bit). It was a frustrating loss, and then the week kind of caught up on to me friday night and we got home early, and I was just tired and mellow. So glad it was a friday. And I so enjoyed the cider we bought on saturday. Ok, so it was a bit of a decadent weekend. Like the greeks say - all in moderation. It isn't like I ate a truly huge bowl of popcorn or most of the cheesecake. Besides, it was good for the soul and I am sure I will walk it off tomorrow in the sun.

Metro?

Since when did we become the Metro Vancouver area?

I don't like it. I have no idea why, but hearing the GVRD described as the Metro-V area irks me something fierce. Yes, it does seem like endless urban area leading in to never ending burbs if you drive in a line leaving the city and heading out towards the valley, but there are differences! It seems like a label that wipes out those differences and lumps everything together. That's my 25 cents worth of ranting for the moment.

Thanks for the notes after the last post - funny how some times it is assuring to check in, get a bit of a pulse, and just do a looky-loo in to the ether. I appreciated it.

I am currently reading Eat, Love, Pray and I am enjoying it quite a bit for the most part. Some parts really resonate, other parts barely stick, and other parts get me thinking. In the first part, Liz talks about being a "good soldier" and my mind spun off considering that. I guess I have been a "good soldier" too - trying to be a good wife, mom, daughter, friend, worker, friend to the environment, pursuing a lot of education, keeping up on monthly payments, making sure I vote, making sure we eat enough vegetables, making sure things are put back in order, trying to be a conscious individual... all that other stuff. Sometimes it is exhausting. What does it amount to at the end of the day? Then there are the parts that are rebellious - when things slide at home (keeping things neat as a pin) and you let it go, driving my SUV, the love of the road trip, bucking the system in little ways, sneaking in moments to read, or to have good belly laughs... I have no point here, just that it is an interesting thought when you delve in to responsibility, how you wear that mantle, and when you have to shake it off and break free... I guess in a roundabout way it comes down to balance, and being aware of all those roles and hats you were during the course of the day, and when you throw them down and search out your own "I statements" and continue to learn about what makes you tick.

For someone that normally strays away from memoirs and autobiography, I seem to have been delving in to a few of them lately!

Ken's head is still throbbing, I actually got to play hockey last Friday night (and amazed everyone that I could still skate and had not gone to pot, so to speak)... I am still getting out to the gym at lunch - although the last few weeks I have been lucky to make it once during the week....

Craziness.

I am sure that my readership has dropped off with my lackadaisical posting as of late.

We have had a real winter. It keeps on snowing. Then turning to rain. Then more snow, and chaos on the streets because no one out on the west coast really knows how to drive in the snow. Then more rain, and wind, and then more unexpected snow. It is quite novel, and the white stuff keeps showing up in our forecasts. Almost all of the snow is gone from our backyard, but they are predicting that snow can hit higher elevations again...

This damn cold and flu season has really hit us hard too. My cold is still clinging on, my ears still pop (really annoying) and Brandon had a bought with the 24 hour stomach flu. Ken has a concussion from hockey, and it is brutal. I really feel for him - I have never had a concussion so I had no idea just how much they impact your life. I don't deal well with headaches (who does) but this has been a 2 week headache in which the usual pain killing methods don't work which comes along with nausea and a whole host of other symptoms. The other part with a concussion is that you don't know when the symptoms will lift, and they say it can take 2-3 weeks. So, Ken is home, frustrated because he can't do what he normally does, and waiting. And waiting sucks. It is hard because there is nothing I can do to lend a helping hand, it is all about time, dark rooms, and rest. Of course, you can't freeze frame life, so there are still things you have to get done, regardless of how you feel. Needless to say, it will be nice when time passes and our household is back to normal. Or whatever normal is, at least feeling better than what we have been.

Even with the snow, I have been trying to get out for more walks. It is too easy to get cooped up in the house during the winter with it's short days and early nights. I can't believe how early I have been falling asleep - I have felt really lame. I haven't even been doing much reading. Once Brandon is asleep, I seem to be dropping off not so long after. I am glad that it is Friday.

Work is decent, I am really enjoying my new job. The break has been awesome for me. I am getting out to the gym at lunches, but the last few weeks that has fallen apart because of meetings, and just weird hours with all the sickness around me. I have been to a few orientations, and we have an upcoming professional development day too. My new employer runs it's show just a little different than my last. It's a good fit.

Just okay.

I had some high hopes for this month's book club read. This is a title that I had put forth, based on a recommendation I had from a dear friend who had also read it. Sorry Gilly, I was not jumping up and down and waving my arms back and forth about this book, but The Birth House was an okay read, but not one that I found was a stellar read. I can't sing it's praises from high on the mountaintop, rather more from a middle perch.

There were parts of this book that I thought were magical - I loved the first section, and then I found the middle lacking the same spirit of the first part. Maybe it was because there were no more stories about Ms. B. The protagonist, Dora, falls somewhere between the willing midwife and the almost cartoonish and evil "modern" maternity doctor who comes peddling his wares. The end of the story picked up for me, and I did find that it almost wound up to a close too fast, I wanted to more about where Dora's future would spin off in to. I guess what I wanted from this book was a little more, the BH is peppered with some interesting characters, and then salted with some really one-dimensional ones. I found that it wavered a bit between these poles, perhaps as this author found her own stride?

There are lots of stories from the east coast, but I would love to read more from the west coast, about our trials and experiences. Perhaps the east coast writers are just better about promoting their books??? I am not sure, but I would love to read more stories about the west, and not just the recognized classics like Moody's "Roughing it in the bush" which I have, but it is just sitting there on my shelf waiting for the right moment (or mood) for me to pick it up.

Truth be told, I love the website for the book, and plan to go back to some exploring. The book was a decent read, not a 10, but worth a few hours whiling away with a book. In the novelties section of the website, you can actually take a quiz to discover if you are hysterical!
